'Beyond the Sea' Review
Who knew? Who knew Kevin Spacey had it in him to write, direct and perform in a neo-classic
This isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s a lovably bizarre mess of a movie that revels in the sheer magic of movies and entertainment in general. It’s the sort of movie where you can burst into technicolour song in the middle of a busy street on a crowded day and have everyone sing along. If that sounds too cheesy to you, exit stage right. But if you’re a lover of pop-corn, you’ll find this confection impossible to resist.
Spacey plays pop/rock/jazz singer and Oscar-nominated actor Bobby Darrin with a gusto that reeks of his love for the classic entertainer. The fact that Spacey has such a devotion to Darrin- essentially a large blip on the cultural radar- as opposed to a traditional icon like Sinatra or Presley is a big part of the movie’s charm.
The film only hits one bad note, for mine: for all his talent, Spacey is simply a little too old to play the part. Sure, “memories are like moonbeams”, but that doesn’t make the sight of Kevin Spacey kissing Kate Bosworth any less creepy.
Regardless, this film is a worthy tribute to a time that probably never existed; the inevitable human flaws that got in the way; and the inherent beauty in those flaws.

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands -- There really was a snake on a plane -- and a poisonous one at that.
Dutch customs officials found a live poisonous snake in a package sent by airmail from Hong Kong to a collector in the Netherlands.
Officials said customs inspectors thought the snake was a rubber gag gift when they first scanned the package. However, the inspectors learned that the snake was a live creature when they noticed it moving.
Officials don't know if the snake might have posed a threat to passengers had it escaped, as in the upcoming movie "Snakes on a Plane."
Dutch authorities said it is illegal to ship vipers to the Netherlands without special permits.
That's awesome. Did you hear the story (I don't have a link handy at the moment) about the pilot who had a snake in his cockpit? And God, yes, I realised how that sounded. But seriously, there was a snake in the cockpit with this dude, and he had to land the plane while restraining this fucking snake.
In his own words, if I remember correctly, he had "one hand full of plane, and one hand full of snake."
That's awesome! When did that happen?
He had a snake in his cockpit? That doesn't sound dodgy at all, lol.
I think it happened earlier this year, while 'Snakes on a Plane' was filming or something.
